Sangit Mahabharati (SMB) stands out in the world of serious music education and research as one of India’s premier academies. Established in 1956 in Mumbai, by the internationally renowned Tabla maestro, music educationist and author, Padma Bhushan Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, the institution is soon growing into a music conservatory, the first of its kind in India. The founder was inspired by the idea of reaching music in its pure form to as many homes as possible by imparting systematic and wholesome training in music and dance thereby giving society a more developed, enriched and meaningful sense of life. Additionally, the collection, documentation and furtherance of invaluable information hand-in-hand with actual research have been noteworthy projects of Sangit Mahabharati.
Besides instruction in music and dance, under its present principalship of late Panditji’s able son Pandit Nayan Ghosh, SMB propagates awareness in classical music by organising annual music festivals, periodical recitals and lecture-demonstrations by renowned artistes, musicologists and experts from other related fields, as also music-appreciation sessions, which are open for the art-loving citizens of the Mumbai metropolis.
SMB enjoys recognition and support from the State and Central Governments, the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi and the Bombay Municipal Corporation besides charitable trusts and organisations.
SANGIT MAHABHARATI is a Public Trust and Registered organisation and depends primarily on public support. Donations are exempted from Income Tax under section 80-G.
